In this section, note the call in verse 15 to "accurately handle the word of truth". In this context "accurately" means (within the context of teaching) to avoid wrangling over words and to avoid worldly and empty chatter. While the words of Scripture and the historico-grammatical literal meaning are crucial to digging deep into God’s truth, a teacher needs to be sensitive to what is essential and worth fighting for and what is peripheral and not worth the emotional energy in disputes. But what is it we are to accurately handle? This is the word of truth which according to Ephesians 1:13 is the gospel and James 1:18 God’s divine fiat. To proclaim the gospel faithfully as expounded from Scripture in the belief that God encountering us with His word of truth has the power to change me and others.
