Even Jesus learned obedience from suffering and in it offered prayers to the Father. And because of His perfection in suffering, he became to those who follow Him the source of eternal salvation. How does Jesus’ suffering become our salvation? Because like Melchizedek (see Hebrews 7:1-4, referencing Genesis 14:18-20) Jesus’ ministry to us is eternal, without beginning or end, seated now at the right hand of the Father interceeding for us. Looking ahead Hebrews 9:14 says, “how much more will the blood (ie suffering) of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your/my conscience from dead works to serve the living God”. Jesus’ perfect obedience in suffering as an unblemished lamb mediates our entry into the new covenant of personal relationship with God. What a perfect plan…what I can not earn on my own Jesus offers to those who believe in Him…new life in relationship with God.
