In these verses, 2 types of people (ground) hear (drink rain) the word. In spite of their similar nourishing, their responses are very different. One type brings forth useful fruit, the other yields thorns and thistles. How can these 2 types of people (presumably both believers) who hear the same word end up with such disparate responses? Verses 11 and 12 suggest an answer…diligence and imitation (of those with faith and patience). Looking back to 4:1-7, those who unite their hearing with faith and obedience enter God’s rest. This is not legalism, but the writer of this letter to the Hebrews continues to thematically remind us that our perseverance is an important part of a faith walk.
