Albert Schweitzer and the eschatological

In his book, The Quest for the Historical Jesus, Albert Schweitzer the physician-theologian of Gabon Africa fame focuses his understanding of who Jesus was not in the historico-critical reconstructions popular in his time but in the eschatological.  This implies that in seeing the historical Jesus as proclaiming a clear culmination of history, it compels and imbues us with a sense of urgency as we reach out to others.  My sense is that this theological underpinning is what fueled his theology of “reverence for life”.  This thesis then can inform Schweitzer’s contribution to the new religio medici.
