Isaiah 42:1-4; Of whom does Isaiah speak?

In Acts 8, an Ethiopian eunuch was reading from a scroll of Isaiah.  This was new reading material for him.  As Philip approached the Ethiopian under direction from the Holy Spirit, he heard him reading from Isaiah (53:7-8).  The Ethiopian asked the central question of the text, “of whom does the prophet speak, himself or someone else”.  This is the same question we can ask of Isaiah 42:1-4.  In both cases the answer is a resounding “someone else”.  That someone else is Jesus Messiah.  These are amazing prophecies of the person and ministry of the servant Jesus Messiah.  The Ethiopian understood the signficance of the ministry of whom the scriptures were speaking and gave his life in faith and baptism to the Lord.
