Isaiah 45; An even more amazing prophecy now

At the end of chapter 44 and the beginning of chapter 45, Isaiah predicts (approx 200 years before the event) that the Persian king Cyrus will be the one to set Israel free from Babylon to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple.  Ezra chapter 1 verse 2 describes the fulfillment of this very specific prophecy.  At the time the prophecy was reassuring to a people struggling to maintain their identity as God’s chosen people.  The fact that God promised their release and return was an encouragement to them.  But to us, looking back on this prophecy we can see how God’s amazing hand brought this very specific bit of history to pass.  That is why Isaiah can go on to describe in the remainder of chapter 45 God’s uniqueness in sovereign and saving power.  “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other.” (Isaiah 45:22)
