Isaiah 58; Finding God’s will

So often, we think of finding God’s will as a specific direction for a specific episode or issue.  God, “show me where to move or what job to take”.  But in Romans 12 and here in Isaiah 58, we see that finding God’s will is not necessarily only about “getting an answer”.  There is a process by which, if we seek God, we can be confident that the path we choose is where God wants us.  Listen to Romans 12, “Therefore by the mercies of God, present your body as a living and holy sacrifice (humbled and repentant)…so that you may know what the will of God is”.  Isaiah 58:11 says, “and the Lord will continually guide you…”  Earlier in Isaiah 58, the prophet sets up “the conditions” for this guidance and he focuses on motives behind fasting.  Verses 4-5 say, “behold you fast for contention and strife and to strike with a wicked fist.  You do not fast like you do today to make your voice heard on high.  Is it a fast like this that I choose, a day for a man to humble himself.”  Both in Romans 12 and Isaiah 58, finding God’s direction ultimately rests on our heart attitude in seeking.  And when the attitude is humbled,  right and pure, we can be confident that God through His Spirit will lead us.  Make the decision in faith for the choice will be the right one when we are being led in this manner.  “Then you will call and the Lord will answer”…(Isaiah 58:9)
