In this chapter Isaiah predicts a future day for the full renewal of His people. He could not foresee the details of the coming Messiah, Jesus, but his supernatural prediction was fulfilled. In Luke 4:18-21, Jesus reads words from Isaiah 61:1,2 that He says are fulfilled in Himself. And what a ministry of fulfillment; the power of the Spirit come down, encouragement and new life for the brokenhearted and the announcement of the favorable year of the Lord. God’s sovereign plan from all eternity brought down to us and freely offered to us. The open offer of God through Jesus still stands more than 2000 years later because He loves all and wants all to come to Him, “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” (2Peter3:9) Why would anyone reject this gift?
