Building an approach to understanding the end times part 4; Daniel 9-12

The reason I think Matthew 24 is the most important passage of end times scripture is because its focus is on the pre-raptured church, ie us. If one holds a pretrib view of the rapture, the book of Revelation is nice but basically is describing events that happen during the tribulation when we are not here. Matthew 24 is a powerful reminder to be ready and anticipating the rapture as the abomination of desolation is taking place. In Matthew 24, Jesus reminds us to turn our attention to the Daniel 9 prophecy of the abomination of desolation. Whatever this event is (see part 3 post), it is a sign of the onset of the tribulation (Mathew 24:15-21).

Daniel 9-12 then gives us a picture of end times chronology. Daniel 9 describes the 70 weeks (the first 69 “weeks of years” having already been fulfilled with the 70th week of years coming as the tribulation). We sit now in the time between the 69th and 70th week (the time between vs 26-27). Daniel 10-12, especially 11-12 if interpreted futuristically provides a chronology which can be interpreted as a rebuilt temple (not necessarily on the present temple mount) which is again destroyed which then portends 1290 days to the abomination of desolation then another 45 days to the pretrib rapture. This does not mean we can predict the rapture’s exact time because the nature of the abomination of desolation is not clearly spelled out. But as these events unfold, the anticipatory warnings of Matthew 24 should have us expectant of the rapture of the church by our Lord…be ready, be prepared, be in prayer…
