Philippians 1:1-11; The heart and focus of ministry

For any who have worked in ministry with others, experiences of both joy and frustration abound. In these verses Paul captures the heart and focus of a true minister’s heart. In writing this letter to the church at Philippi, the first church he founded on his second missionary journey in Europe after being called to the continent by the Holy Spirit, Paul’s heart for his ministry team shows itself. He is thankful for them and for the role they played in working with him (vss 3-6). He holds a love for them in his heart (vs 7-8). And he prays for them (vss 9-11). Look at what he prays…that their love (faith) would grow in knowledge and discernment and that they would be sincere, blameless and filled with the love of Christ. As we “participate in the gospel” together, we need to remember to lift each other up in this manner.
