In encouraging the faith walk of his children of faith, John now turns away from the inner challenge of abiding and walking in the light to the external challenge of maintaining a proper object of affection. Guarding against “love of the world” does not mean we do not care about the people that make up the world. We do care. What it does mean is that the spirit of the world which calls one to lust and boast is put aside for the love of the Father which offers eternal life (vs 17). But just as there is a physical world tempting us with physical things so too there is a spiritual world tempting us to walk away from spiritual truth. This spiritual world that is against Christian truth is called “antichrist” and it will drag one astray if that one is not careful. How do we guard against such deception? “Let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father”. What is it that was heard from the beginning? The ministry of “the Word of Life” (1 John 1:1). Another promise from the Lord which guides and protects us is the anointing of his Holy Spirit on our lives. The Holy Spirit through His anointing “teaches [us] about all things and is true and is not a lie and just as it [He] has taught you, you abide in Him”. “You have no need for anyone to teach you” (verse 27).
