1 John 4:1-6; The criterion for an authentic teacher

Now comes a warning.  As we grow in the faith we are bound to encounter teachers.  Chapter 2 reminds us our anointing in the Holy Spirit is all the teacher we really need.  However as we appraise words of instruction and exhortation, how can we be sure of their veracity?  We can test the spirit of the teacher to see where they stand.  How?  Verse 2 says, “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God”.  Plain and simple, an authentic teacher can be confirmed by how they proclaim the person and ministry of Jesus.  The question “who is Jesus to you” will make all motives clear.
