Proverbs 12; On words and speech

James’ timeless reminder on the difficulty of controlling our speech can be found in James 3:1-12.  “See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire”…words which carry vivid significance in this part of the country.  In Proverbs 12:6 and 17-19 Solomon also comments on the importance of words and speech.  In verse 6 he focuses on how our own speech effects us personally.  Whereas the speech of a “wicked person lies in wait for blood” (brings conflict and even violence), the words of the “upright” deliver them (them being the upright, delivery being solution and resolution to conflict).  Verses 17-19 go on to describe the nature of these upright words, truthful and wise.  These truthful and wise words minister to others by bringing “healing” and “steadiness”.
