There are a number of exhortations to attitudes and actions within friendships found in this chapter. “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” as opposed to “deceitful kisses” from an enemy…harder to hear but ultimately in one’s best interest (verse 6). Verse 9 expands on “friendly exhortation” by reminding us that a friends counsel is sweet. Faithfulness in friendship (even across generations) can be as important as brotherly relationships (verse 10). Friends can also sharpen each other as iron sharpens iron (verse 17).
