This chapter is divided into 2 distinct parts. The first part in verses 1-9 has a king receiving teaching from his mother. She reminds him to avoid wine and entanglements with women. Furthermore she reminds him to defend the rights of the “afflicted and needy”. The crucial issue here is that she is able to teach and exhort given the position she has developed in the life of her family. The second part (verses 10-31) describes characteristics of an excellent wife; trustworthy, industrious, generous, beautiful, wise and God fearing. These qualities earn her “praise in the gates”.
