ACC/AHA 2013 updated guidelines for cholesterol treatment…a paradigm shift

The new guidelines for treatment of cholesterol have been released.  These guidelines change the way we have been managing cholesterol.  Previously, absolute values for ldl cholesterol were the main focus for treatment.  Now the focus is on disease states and risk with goals to be on statin therapy for “dose intensity”.  These recommendations also do not emphasize a role for any agents in cholesterol treatment other than statins.  There is controversy regarding these new guidelines and coming “risk calculators”.  The link below is a nice summary of these guidelines.  Downloadable Risk Estimator below.  Note also our statin decision aid link to the Mayo resource has an online version of this new risk calculator also.
