Preventative and proactive approaches to managing ones health are important.  The link below is a summary of a Cochrane data base meta-analysis that gives interesting insight into the benefits and risks of screening mammography.

Additionally, a new study has come out that leads to conclusions questioning the value of mammography.  While this study from BMJ 2/2014 concludes that mammography does not appear to influence breast cancer survival rates, these conclusions should be reviewed cautiously.  While the current recommendation for regular mammograms is still the norm, we may start to see a trend towards better risk stratified patient selection for intensity of screening especially in the 40-59 year old age group (that was the focus of this study).  BMJ link is below:
