Zechariah 1:1-6; The starting point for revitalization: Word and Repentance

As Zechariah opens his prophecy to the people of Judah as they return from 70 years of Babylonian captivity, he calls them to revitalization by proclaiming God’s word and calling the community to repentance.  The word is clearly delineated as from the Lord and 5 other times in Zechariah’s prophecy he uses this term (1:7, 4:8, 6:9, 11:4, 12:1).  Psalm 119:43 calls this the word of truth (NASB).  God promises to speak to us through his word; read, preached and taught, in order to guide us.  Our response to His word starts with a heart of humility and repentance.  Zechariah’s fellowship, “repented and said, “as the Lord of Hosts purposed to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us”” (1:6).  The foundation illustrated for us here is a commitment to be open to where God’s word may lead…
