Gene replacement therapy; how cool is this?

Check this article out. A “proof of concept” treatment approach for fixing the broken gene in a person with sickle cell anemia. It goes like this…new gene is put into a virus. patient has “chemo” to knock down their own cells. virus (which does not cause any disease) is put into the patient which then “infects” the new stem cells that are now rebuilding in the “chemo-ized” patient. virus unloads the new gene into the stem cells, fixing the gene. the stem cells grow with the new gene in them. the stem cells are “autologous” so there is no “embryo harvesting” issues.
